Today, I started off my day in the clinic. I followed around a PA, seeing all of my mentor's pre-ops and post-ops while he was away. Then, in the afternoon, I was invited to observe in two surgeries. It was by far my favourite part of my internship so far.
I was walking down the hallway, going to meet a friend for lunch, when Dr. Anderson walked up to me and said, "We missed you in surgery today! Hey, what are you doing right now? I have a couple more procedures today that you might be interested in." At that moment, I reflected inward... Do I choose food, or surgery?
What do you think I picked?!
I went into the women's changing room, found myself a pair of scrubs (which NEVER fit quite right in the pants) and ran into my first surgery of my internship.
At first, I thought I was going to get dizzy and pass out, but I found out that was only because I forgot to eat breakfast and lunch that day. I ate a banana, then I watched a rod get put down a person's tibia to stabilize the fracture. I watched the process, and saw what a doctor has to go through when the procedure seems to be working less than well. It was a really interesting day, and I'm excited to go back tomorrow!
