Materials Project
In this project, we either had to write about a material in a magazine article, or write a company with a way to improve one of their projects. We studied a material, and wrote about what gave the material its particular chemical characteristics and how they could be applied in a real-world setting. I chose the article, and I wrote about the future of high-temperature superconductors, a group of material that could one day create a completely efficient electrical system. Then, we had to propose our project to a group of "investors" and try to attain funds to either continue research or develop our project.
Elevator Pitch
The scientist inside of me has long dreamed of a future like you see in the movies- shiny buildings, hover-cars, robot servants, everything. But it wasn’t until I was older that I realized that none of that could happen if we continued to create and transport energy the same way we do now. I mean, none of that looks cool covered in pollution, right? This material called cuprates could change that. Materials that we usually use as insulators and magnets could be transferred into a completely efficient type of wiring, with no electric resistance. This could, with future improvements, revolutionize our energy use by eliminating energy waste. What I would like is funding to continue researching these unique materials to one day be able to implement them into houses to create high-efficiency neighborhoods in places like New York or other high-population-density areas. In the long run, my hope is to eliminate energy waste, and combined with clean, renewable energy sources, we could create an environmentally-friendly way to power our world.
