Writing Reflection
3 Goals for Writing
- Logical Flow
- In my essays, I want to work on helping my ideas flow from one idea to the other. In my blog post on September 24, I talked about the “Tyranny of the Nanny State” reading. It was a great reading where the author spoke about his beliefs in lesser government control and how government entities are stepping in where intervention is unnecessary. I had an idea of what I had to say, but when I wrote it down it felt really choppy to me. I want to get better at making my writing sound very cohesive and focused. I think I could do this by having someone else always read my first drafts and starting with my edits there. If I start revisions with a flowing, cohesive text then I can bring my writing to a new level.
- Understanding the Text
- Also, I want to ensure that I understand the text that I’m analyzing. I felt like I had some issues with the Toqueville writing because I had a hard time connecting it to the prompts we were offered. One of the pieces of feedback I received was that my essay wasn’t really following what my thesis said. I associate this with my misunderstanding of the reading- I don’t think I took away what I was supposed to, which made my essay wrong. I want to work on this by finding someone to help me make these connections so my writing can be even stronger.
- Reinforcing my ideas with better evidence
- I want to work on making my ideas stronger with evidence. I have repeatedly faced the issue where I have ideas, but I don’t choose the right evidence to create a strong argument. This was evident in my Toqueville essay. I had trouble finding evidence to make my idea resonate with people. I will work on this by outlining my essay first, just in reference to the points I want to hit.
