Project Reflection
For this project, we studied Native American culture in the media and how it has changed over time. We looked at different portrayals of Native life through history, and we used these to critically examine our own biases and how they've evolved. Through this project, we've analyzed texts such as stories in First Person, First Peoples and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven.
I think the main thing I took away from this project was that I need to be more aware of the possible biases in the way media presents things. I've noticed I seem to be much more accepting of what people tell me, and I want to be able to critically examine everything I'm presented with in the media. It definitely challenged my frame of mind- I was able to delve deeper into Native culture and be able to understand their history and their struggles in much more depth. There was most definitely a part of this project that made me a bit uncomfortable, especially when we studied how the English settlers treated the Native people. I felt a little bit guilty, but I eventually realized that I shouldn't feel guilty because I didn't do anything directly, but I should learn from it and make sure I don't make any mistake like that again.
In response to our essential question, I believe that analyzing multiple sources in a historical context can deeply enhance one's understanding of history. It gives them all of the information, and a person can form their own opinions and conclusions about historical events. Also, understanding multiple perspectives can help one understand the struggles modern Native people face and how we can help integrate their culture into our society.
