Model Senate 2015
For this project, we learned about how a bill is passed through congress, then we wrote our own legislation and had a Senate session to pass amendments and, ultimately, two new bills. My partner and I wrote legislation that incentivized green transportation alternatives, but it was not chosen for the docket. In the end, we chose two bills- one which proposed a reduction in unnecessary defense budget spending, and one that put a severe limit on oil production.
During Senate, we each represented a different senator. I was assigned Dianne Feinstein, senior senator from the state of California. We did all of our model senate work in the perspective of our senator, including write amendments, write speeches, and vote. I wrote my speech on the environmental bill, but I amended it vigorously during the committee sessions. That bill was amended so badly that it wouldn't be helping the environment at all, and it would only increase the amount of oil production in the US, which was the opposite of what we wanted. In the end, the defense bill passed and the environmental bill failed. It was a really good exhibition, and I learned a lot about political process. It's been something I've been interested in for a while, and I was really excited to do this project. |
